A holiday park with a difference is opening near Berwick with help from a Defra grant. Tourists will soon be able to stay in a wigwam as they enjoy the sights and sounds of the Northumberland Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB).
Farmer John Whiteford, of Borewell Farm, Scremeston, the most northerly end of the AONB, already welcomes scores of visitors to the farm’s award-winning interactive arts centre and restaurant Pot-A-Doodle. Now with the help of a Rural Enterprise Scheme (RES) grant from Defra, he is creating a wigwam holiday park to cater for those looking for a short break, particularly walkers and cyclists, and those who wish to start or finish the Coasts to Castles route from Berwick.
John Whiteford had already signed up to Defra’s Countryside Stewardship Scheme (CSS) in 2003, to help preserve the exceptional dune flora and create a new walk (details of which can be found on the Conservation Walks and Rides website at http://countrywalks.defra.gov.uk), with information panels and leaflets, for visitors to enjoy and learn about the local environment and wildlife.
Mr Whiteford said:
“Working with Defra we’re helping to preserve this unique environment and the wildlife it supports. Many visitors already enjoy this beautiful countryside and by adding the wigwam accommodation we hope to encourage them to linger a little longer.”
Steve Pullan, an adviser at Defra’s Rural Development Service in the North East, said:
“Mr Whiteford has already developed a thriving business, which proves you can successfully combine environmental conservation with business success, and the addition of the Wigwams will give a new, added dimension to the attractions at the farm.”
Work is now well underway on the construction of the wigwams and they are expected to be open for their first guests in May. To find out more contact Christine Whiteford at Pot a Doodle Do on 01289 307107 or visit the website at www.northumbrianwigwams.com.
