Following on from the initial invitation to join this network we have put together some more information to help encourage some more responses.
|
This new Heritage Network will look to bring together individuals, clubs, societies, institutions and others with a common interest in traditional boats of their areas and the inshore fishing industry around the North Sea.
This will probably include boat clubs, traditional boat builders, museums, archaeologists, fishing industry archivists, and academic institutions.
Outcomes of the network will probably include attendance by interested organisations or individuals at appropriate public events such as the Tall Ships Race, traditional boat festivals and local events around fishing harbours etc to raise awareness of the different types of traditional boats and fishing techniques. There may be scope for regional or transnational meetings to discuss and share knowledge of the subject, encourage the conservation or reconstruction of traditional boats, support and encourage events involving traditional boats and even to encourage partners attending NAVE Nortrail meetings to use traditional boats to get to the meetings!
The Portsoy Scottish Traditional Boat Festival have already expressed an interest in hosting a seminar/workshop at their 2006 festival based around this network. NAVE Nortrail may be able to support this event with funding for speakers or delegates from partner regions to attend as well as running costs for the seminar/workshop. (This event is an annual event, in June, in the town of Portsoy which is on the north coast of Aberdeenshire, on the Moray Firth)
There is a traditional boat race with a triangular course with stops in the UK, Denmark and Sweden (or was it Norway?) later in 2005. There could be opportunities for the relevant NAVE Nortrail partner in these regions to promote their section of the coastal trail, as well as this network, in the towns where the race goes. Information about NAVE Nortrail could be circulated to the skippers as part of the race briefing.
In the UK there are a number of youth training schemes which use traditional boat building skills as a means of developing skills for young people to help them get full time work, especially working with young people from areas of deprivation. There may be scope to link with these programmes to reconstruct boats or generate more opportunities.
