MOORS, DALES, NABS AND WYKES

Top level General info

If you are looking to work off the excesses of the Christmas holiday, in body or in spirit, Moors, Dales, Nabs and Wykes – Rambling around the Cleveland Way by Alex Wilson has just been published by the North York Moors National Park Authority with funding from the Countryside Agency and the EU.

Ideal reading for walkers and armchair explorers alike. this is a wonderful quirky view of the countryside around the Cleveland Way. Alex’s own photographs, taken in all weathers as he walked the 110 miles from Helmsley to Filey, make up half the book and provide a wonderful insight into this beautiful part of the North East.

The Cleveland Way - one of 12 National Trails supported by the Countryside Agency - was designated in 1969 but its history is, in parts, 200 million years old. From the ammonites and belemnites of the lower Jurassic to the quantum age search for the mystery matter and energy of the universe, the Cleveland Way has a story to tell. It has been, at one time or another, home to the creatures of the sea, the desert, the swamp and most things in between. Alex tells this unique story in his own inimitable style which will keep you laughing as well as informed from beginning to end.

Moors, Dales, Nabs and Wykes gives an insight into local traditions and provides a potted history of the area,” explains National Trails Officer, Malcolm Hodgson. “The coastal stretch of the Cleveland Way is now part of the North Sea Trail so we have funding from the EU to interpret and promote our heritage, particularly the links with other areas involved in the Nortrail Project. Alex Wilson’s book is just one of a number of North Sea Trail events which will be happening along the coast over the next few years.”

The North Sea Trail is funded by the EU Interreg III Programme. It aims to provide walking opportunities which enable people to explore the heritage of the North Sea coast. The North York Moors National Park Authority is working in partnership with Northumberland, East Lothian, Fife, Aberdeenshire, Aberdeen County and the Moray Firth Partnership as well as with coastal regions in Norway, Sweden, Denmark, The Netherlands and Germany.
