Invitation to Heritage Network: Transportation of four-legged animals
|
Today and hundreds and even thousands of years back in time food has been transported from one area to another – from one part of Europe to other parts of Europe. A section of this trade has been self-transportable food: animals that were able to walk.
We would like to start a “Heritage Network” with the subject of this transportation and trade with four-legged animals. And we – we are mainly the museum-people working with the western ox trail in Jutland. Our main interest is of course the transportation on this ox trail with the road, the bridges, the inns and so on, but connected with this is the shipping of oxen from the harbours along the coast; the merchants and other people taken part in the trade and transportation; the consumer part in German, English and Dutch towns etc. We of course know that the Danish trade and transportation of oxen and other animals is only a minor part of the trade in Europe as a hole. That transportation and trade has taken place in smaller or bigger scale nearly all over Europe.
As our work with the western ox trail in Jutland is part of the Nortrail project, we would like to have contact with others in “the Nortrail areas”, others who are interested in this kind of trade and transportation. We would like to be able to put the Danish history into perspective in the North Sea–area, we would like to be able to make lines of connections and comparisons with similar stories told along the Nortrail.
In February 2004 the three counties along the Drove Road held a seminar for the museum curators in the counties. It was a success with more than 40 participants. We arrange a new seminar in 2005, but this time we want invite other Nortrail partners to participate as well.
We are aware that the subject of this “Heritage Network” is rather narrow, but that is deliberately. If the participants should be able to gain from it – i.e. getting information useful in the work with Nortrail, then we have to have easy access to this information. Often it would demand extensive research to achieve the information. Through this network we can increase our knowledge in an easy way and feel happy about it. A narrow subject is more likely to offer this gaining.
The seminar takes place on Bundsbæk Mølle near Skjern the 24th – 25th of February 2005. Please note the attached programme.
