The basic idea of the North Sea Trail, NORTRAIL, is to regenerate a network of landscapes and pathways, linking footpaths and sites in recreational areas of the coastal counties encompassing the North Sea.
NAVE NORTRAIL will facilitate access and to identify physical structures like footpaths, coastal sea links, lines of lighthouses etc. in the coastal landscapes of the countries encompassing the North Sea, enabling visitors, domestic and international ones, to recognise a tourist oriented coastal cultural heritage concept.
So far 26 regions, in Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Germany, the Netherlands, England and Scotland, are involved in the initiative (see Front page for map).
Partners are at different stage when working with the pathway system. A large group of partners are in the process of planning, others do have the whole network of trails and pathways there all ready. A few are somewhere in between, having some pathways ready, but planning others.
The ambition is to have the whole network of trails signposted and ready for use within 2006.
